Were you BORN to blog: Part 5

Hey there! I don’t have much time today so I am actually multi-tasking! Reading my chapters and creating this post. I have to be completely honest…I am actually going to be skipping over a few chapters of Born to Blog. I was reading over the weekend and something suddenly wasn’t clicking. As I was reading I had no idea how I wanted to write about it…

It’s funny because the next two chapters from where I left off last week are about YOUR business & BLOGGING. Hmmm kinda does seem like a priority don’t ya think? Sometimes you just nees to step back, take a different direction, & learn to NOT overcomplicate things. Funny thing is that is what the next chapter of Born to Blog is about: Keeping your blog at a minimum! I loved this chapter so much.
It is not unusual to want every detail laid out for perfection BUT keep in mind it is also okay to change your direction. As long as you stay consistent (which I am working on being better at) & hook your readers you can keep it as simple as possible!

Let me give you a little personal and honest insight: My blog is pretty bare and basic at this point. Why have I kept it this way? I feel as though I am still going through a “test run” period if that makes sense. I wanna make sure this is where I want my time and effort to be going. I know that sounds like I lack confidence but before I put MORE time and any money I want to be able to keep up with my weekly minimum. And I am having a blast because I have learned SO much from all of the new friends I have made from the blogging scene. But before I slowed sown a bit and created my own post calendar I did some rapid publishing, which I highly recommend. What I mean by this is posting as many posts as possible during a short amount of time to gain quick experience & exposure. This way right from the beginning you can receive feedback from readers so you can have a good idea of what they like and want to see more of! I did this through the Alex Beadon Feel Good Challenge!

This is pretty much the jist of this chapter. Feel out what kind of content you wanna produce, how much content you wanna produce, your audience, your platform, etc. Identify YOUR blogging skills: Remember there were 5! There is a quiz to find out what you are. (I will leave details on how to receive that below) As you start out you want to begin to build momemtum! How can you so this? Do not be afraid to post links back to your blog on Facebook or Instagram: I do all the time! Your audience is more then the bloggers on the same platform as you. Some of your readers may not be bloggers at all! My Mom told me she is always reading my content ๐Ÿ™‚

So my biggest and best advice I have learned through both business and blogging is: KISS!

P.S. If you are interested in taking a look at the quiz to see what YOUR blogging characteristics may be feel free to email me (brookeashley0319@gmail.com) OR message me on Facebook (Brooke Ducati)

Were you BORN to blog: Part 4

Hellooooo bloggers! I am a day behind (I’m sorry!) Been a little hectic but I am here with the next 2 characteristics of what it takes to be a GOOD blogger. Now remember ANYONE CAN BE A BLOGGER. It’s just a matter of how you implement the 5 traits! Last week I discussed storytelling, dreaming, & persuading. Tonight I am gonna touch on teaching & curation! And if you don’t know what curating is that is okay because I didn’t know either until I read! Sooo let’s go!

We are teaching every single day whether we know it or not. Through blogging we are teaching. It may be a lesson, sharing motivational/inspirational expertise, how to, or tutorial! In the book Born to Blog there are 3 different types of teaching encounters: Teaching by doing, conversation, and coaching & mentoring. The method that usually gets looked over (but I connect with the most) is coaching & mentoring! I have a natural feel for this method. People who have a knack for creating lists or how to scenarios can be considered a “coach” or a “mentor.” You are coaching someone through a task or project. Although it gets looked over a lot, people enjoy this type of style because it is pre-organized right in front of them. They are given a set of “rules” or check points on how to do a particular task. It may not come off as a formal mentor per-say but it does kinda make it seem like you know what your doing ๐Ÿ˜‰

Like I said we are ALL teaching everyday whether we know it or not. EMBRACE it, even if you don’t think your the best at it. As long as you bring the energy and passion for whatever it is your discussing people will be attracted to your writing! Teaching is only natural in all of us.

Sooooo now I can tie in the last and final part of the 5 characteristics of a GOOD blogger- curation. Hmmm seems tricky! Curation is about collecting and bringing information all together. Even further then that curation is about bringing together the best info about a subject. Mark and Stanford say ” think of your blog as the gallery and the blogger as the gallery owner.”ย

PINTEREST! Isn’t it crazy how much Pinterest comes into play with blogging? I LOVE it. Pinterest is a perfect way to wrap up and better explain curation. Also, I didn’t just think this up….this is the example the authors use ๐Ÿ˜‰ Pinterest is a unique way for people to share there story and experiences through pictures & links (kinda like Instagram!) You are creating boards to express your personality and categorize your your passions and hobbies…which can then further lead to blog posts! If you are able to create collections of a particular themes to discuss different topics on your blog you will be able to connect with those of similar passion. BONUS: If you learn how to curate properly it could definitely save you time! It will be useful if you are not the greatest at coming up with original content…BUT if you do this always remember to give credit where needed ๐Ÿ˜‰ I would teach you how to properly curate & apply all these other characteristics BUT it’s all a learning experience that you will have to read for yourself! Next week I will be shifting into a little bit of different direction as we take these skills and talk about if you have a business WHY you SHOULD be blogging!

I apologize again for the late post!

Much love,

Brooke Ashley

A goal without a plan is simply a wish.

Good morning peeps! Happy Monday! After some downtime and planning it’s time to get into full swing of blogging. Earlier last week I had posted a picture of Facebook of my crazy OCD-ness and got a ton of feedback on it & it inspired me to write this post. Today I am gonna touch on PLANNING. If you are going to take on blogging or really anything for that matter seriously and for a purpose you have to have a game plan. Now you don’t have to be as elaborate with details like I have been but you have to have something on paper before you start diving in. So let’s get into it.

Earlier last week I created a calendar planning what I wanted to share with you all.

Now for starters you could create a blank calendar by hand (which is what I did) or simply buy one. You could get one at the dollar store or Walmart, don’t go crazy with $$$.Okay now that you have this blank calendar you need to fill it in with your ideas. This is where most of us are stumped. You wanna take this whole blogging thing seriously but don’t know where to start and your scared to plan in advance. Don’t tell me your not cause I used to be ๐Ÿ˜‰ You just gotta do it. How?

First things first decide when your most creative time of day is. Is it first thing in the morning, afternoon, evening, or super late at night? For me it’s first thing in the morning. I will write my blog for the day in the morning and spend the day putting it out there and planning for the next. I always thought late afternoon was my prime time but then I always found myself falling asleep! (Whoops)

Next are you using your blog for business? Most of us are! Plan when you wanna talk about things in your business. But let me tell ya a little secret…You don’t wanna talk about your business 24/7, everyday, every post. People will GET BORED. You need to mix it up and play the 80/20 or 70/30 game. Here is a little glimpse into my notes. I know I am only going to discuss certain tidbits of my business a few times a month, especially right now when I just wanna network and get to know people & I want them to get to know me. I don’t expect anyone to want my services and products when they have no clue who the heck I am.

Talk about you, what you like to do, passions, family, your life, etc etc. People wanna know about YOU! It’s the same if you are Instagram for example. You don’t wanna constantly be posting pictures of your products and services. You will come off as looking “spammy” and annoying. You wanna connect with others on a personal level before you offer them your product or service.

So now your probably saying to yourself “Well when I am not talking about my business then what do I write about?” Great question! USE YOUR RESOURCES! My biggest resource is Pinterest. Fellow pinners have created boards of topics you could flesh out. Examples:

blogging 2

blogging 1

blogging 4

blogging 3

Go on Pinterest NOW. Start pinning all of these fabulous ideas. Create a board to keep them all together. My board is “Blog Inspiration.” Now don’t just pin them…read them! Pick and choose and fill in your days! Also, keep in mind that it okay to change things around. And what I mean is that you can fill in your calendar and then something great might come to mind so switch around your posts. I did this morning!

Notice all my highlighter marks ๐Ÿ˜‰

The more content you have the better!!! Honestly this is really it ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t over-think this, take a breath, and just brainstorm. Keep in mind that just because you write an idea down doesn’t mean you have to write on it either. You may take note of it but then not actually write about it for a year & that’s okay! Also, last tip I will give! DO NOT OVERWHELM YOURSELF. If you can only post once a week, then post once a week. My goal is 4 times a week! Whats your goal?

P.S. Please share what YOU do to plan! I know there are so many different ways, templates, post-it notes, etc!

Much love,

Brooke Ashley xoxox

Lack of PASSION is fatal!

Ahhhhh I am so sad! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

We are coming in for a landing for the #FeelGoodBloggingChallenge on Day 7. BUT I am soooo happy because I have met amazing people through this experience! I feel have never felt such a connection with a large group of people. We are the ultimate support system!

Okay I think I avoided today’s topic long enough…Blog challenge NUMBER 7 (eeekkkkkkkk) A Controversial Post!

So I think a huge battle that any business owner (or anyone in general) face is Passion OVER Experience. When scoping out a potential business partner/ employee etc, what do you go for? The person with talent and thriving passion OR the person with years of experience. Neither are necessarily the wrong choice but which one will bring long term happiness.

“To succeed, you have to believe in something with such a passion that it becomes a reality.” – Anita Roddick

Well I suppose it’s pretty clear where I am going from here. When prospecting a potential new business partner I seek passion over experience. And I am about to tell you why!

For example: Say I own a pizzeria and I am looking to hire a new cook who can flip pizza dough in the air to make our crust. I have 2 people come in to apply for the position. Prospect #1 walks in completely burnt out, yet confident because they know they have been doing this for 10 years. Then you have prospect #2 come in smiling, just as confident as #1 but I sense excitement and “unknowing-ness.” It appears as though the choice is simple…I go with prospect #1. Why? Because they said they are experienced. All I have to do at this point is give them a name-tag & a paycheck and they are good to go. I mean they come to work completely miserable everyday (which drives me bonkers) but hey at least they know what they are doing. My work here is done.

WRONGGGGGG! I personally would go with prospect #2. Now let me clarify something before I go any further. I want you to understand that I am NOT telling you to never seek the person with experience, because without those experienced individuals around us then who are we to learn from? What I AM telling you is to seek the passion. Passion is ENERGY. Passion is what drives you. Personally my success is fueled by my passion for what I do.

I am an entrepreneur in the makeup and beauty industry. A year ago when I partnered with Motives Cosmetics I had ZERO experience. Yes I said it ZERO experience. Now why would someone want to partner with me? I had no idea what I was doing or what I was supposed to talk about…

You wanna know why people want to work with me? Because I have energy. A person’s energy can tell you more about them then their words. I craved to know all the knowledge I could get on my hands on. I sit here even a year later and I still don’t know everything but any chance I get I still have that burning desire to keep feeding my brain. I watch countless YouTube videos, tinker with my makeup everyday, & read about the products. Now in my business it’s split down the middle when it comes to experience. Yes we work with a handful of worldwide known makeup artists who have been in the industry for years as freelancers & love what we have to offer. ย In the same sense there are thousands of girls just like me who CRAVE to know more about this industry & were lucky to even know the difference from our eyeliner and mascara.

As time goes on Iย WILL ย be the experienced one. A few years from now I will be the expert because of my willingness to always be open to new knowledge that was unfamiliar to me. But I won’t change my prospecting. I will always be seeking people with excitement and passion. Experience can follow. It’s not always guaranteed that you can find the “spark” in someone who has been in the industry for years and years.

“There is no experience like on-the-job training.” – Hank Azaria

I would love to know your thoughts! Please leave some feedback below!

Much love,

Brooke Ashley xoxox

You can DO IT too!

WOW. So today is Day 2 of the Alex Beadon #FeelGoodBloggingChallenge

She definitely set me up for a “challenge” with today’s topic….and that is because I never thought of WHY I do what I do. So in the next few hundred words I am going to discover what that WHY is for myself.
What is my story? That is such a great question. I never wanted to do what I am currently doing. No, wait that is actually a lie. I never thought I COULD do what I am currently doing. And that is being a young entrepreneur/ business owner & blogger. I will start my story about 2 and a half years back.
I remember sitting at dinner with my now boyfriend Aaron. We were having our second “first date.” We were catching up on what we have been doing in our lives since our time apart from one another. I told him how I was in classes seeking to be an elementary school teacher. You could tell in my voice there wasn’t much passion, but I mean I was in college so I was doing it right, right? He went on about how be started a business and had NO desire to go back to school. Needless to say I was scared. At that moment I had doubts. I didn’t know if us becoming US together again was going to be a great idea. He had no direction and no desire…except to be this “entrepreneur” or something like that.
I didn’t wanna give up on us but I was nervous as heck. Something was telling me there was a bigger picture here. Something was telling me there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I just didn’t know what that was yet.
Moving forward I learned to be supportive of this business venture of Aaron’s. I went to meetings and conferences and supported his decisions 100%, because I wanted what was making him happy. I loved listening to the speakers. Even when they were not directly talking about business they shared honest information about there life experiences and how they have made an impact, how they have set themselves apart from the others, etc. And it really got the wheels turning in my head.
I suddenly started to ponder….Could I do this? Is there MORE for me out there? Could I be MY own boss? But it was more then that. I always knew I was different but I could never exactly figure out what it was that made me so separate from others that I knew personally. To make a long story short I became a business owner January of this past year. I took a leap not knowing if it was going to be for me.
Becoming a business owner was just the beginning for me. I partnered with Shop.com specializing in Motives Cosmetics. And in the beginning I laughed because I barely even knew how to put on mascara.
It wasn’t until around April of this year that I wanted to do something more. I wanted to create a presence (not only with my products or business but for myself). I wanted people to know who I was. Let me clarify…not for popularity reasons but to INSPIRE. To not only take my knowledge of what my business has to offer to change people’s lives but also to be THAT person who INSPIRES them each and everyday & basically reassures that person that they are capable of anything.
Why am I passionate about what I do?
I wanna be the person who changes lives. Not only financially but most importantly with my presence. I want people to see my Instagram or my Facebook, or my blog and say “that girl inspired me to keep going,” “that girl inspired me to chase my dreams,” “that girl inspired me to embrace who I really am.”
Stay with me here…I want people to realize they are capable of doing ANYTHING if they put their mind to it. It’s not about what your parents or grandparents or friends want you to do. It’s about what YOU wanna do with your life.
Don’t ever be afraid to take risks, they are what make life worth living for. Remember in the beginning when I told you I was going to school to be a teacher? I did that because at that point in my life I felt like that was my calling(and it was). BUT ย what happened next was the breakthrough that sadly a lot of people will never discover. I woke up and realized that was not MY passion, MY future, and not MY desire anymore. Instead of being miserable and settling and complaining I decided to make a change. And okay mine was a little more of a jump then just switching college majors, but maybe that is the kinda jump people need to take more often then not.
Now don’t take this the wrong way. Don’t go to your parents, spouse, friends, whomever and say “that girl told me to jump and not to go to school.” No the message here is to really just think about what it is your doing and really just figure out if you are doing what you love. That’s all. And my job here is too help INSPIRE you.
I INSPIRE you to take a chance. If you win you will be happy; and if you lose then at least you will be wise.
My passion is the words and pictures I share with my story. I am on a journey I never thought I would see myself on. And that’s why I tell you today to take a risk because it could turn into something beautiful and worthwhile.

Much love,

Brooke Ashley xoxox

ย P.S. Aaron I love you with all my heart. I can say if it wasn’t for you
I may have never truly discovered the person I have become. โค
